2002:

District Carol Service at Erith St.John.

A great deal of effort was put into the arrangements for the Carol service at St Johns. It is a shame therefore that a few more District members didn't turn up. Our thanks go to the local ringers for their hard work, and I hope that the event will be better attended next time.

……………..

District Practice at Beckenham.

The practice at Beckenham on December 7th was attended by 20 members. We rang Plain hunt on 9 and 10, Call-changes, Stedman Caters, Cambridge S.Royal, and several good attempts at Bristol S.Royal. We will work more on Bristol in the coming year. The event closed with mulled wine and mince pies.

……………..

District practice at Dartford.

23rd November - Once again, a potentially useful practice was not well attended. Only 12 people were present. We did, however, manage to ring "Stanwell Little Bob Triples"!!?!?!?

……………..

Call-Change Competiton St Mary Cray.

The clear but chilly afternoon of Saturday 16th November saw nine District bands from eight towers compete for the trophy. Once again we see an excellent ammount of interest in this event, which I find very pleasing. The competition was judged by me, (the District Master), since no other judge had been found. I felt that most of the ringing was fairly good, although I might have hoped for some even more "special " ringing on these fine bells. Most bands did not seem to ring with the confidence that is fitting for their abilities. Please don't take these competitions too seriously! Just chill-out and enjoy your ringing.

There seemed to be some confusion regarding the meaning of the rules, and I hope that this can be cleared-up before the next competition. I look forward to seeing even more bands enter next year!

The results were as follows:

1st Bromley Parish -15 faults

2nd Crayford -21 1/2 faults

3rd Horton Kirby -24 faults

4th St Mary Cray -25 Fraults

5th Chelfield Green -27 faults

6th Erith - 32 1/2 faults

7th Eltham -33 faults

8th Dartford -37 faults

9th Chelsfield Blue -49 faults

……………..

District Practice at Woolwich.

This practice on October 26th ,was the least well-attended of the year with only 13 members present. We did, however, manage some creditable ringing on these difficult bells. We rang Grandsire, Stedman and some Surprise Major.

……………..

A.D.M. at West Wickham on 12 October.

The A.D.M. passed off without a hitch and a good service was followed by an excellent tea and a reasonably short meeting where some new members were elected, and some old friends re-elected. The District officers remain unchanged, but it should be noted that Mary intends to stand down from her amazingly long service as District Secretary, which spans a total of 40 years!

The afternoon continued with some rewarding ringing, and of course, a visit to the pub.

……………..

District practice at Downe.

It was nice to re-visit Downe on the 14th September, where the last two of the six bells have now been re-hung. We had some good ringing with 20 or so ringers present. Among the methods rung were Plain Bob Minor, Grandsire, Cambridge and Cunecastre S Minor.

……………..

District practice at St. Nicholas Chislehurst

The practice on th 24th August was good, and approx. 25 members performed well on these difficult bells. We rang many things including Call-changes, Stedman, and 8-spliced.

……………..

District Practice at Southwark.

The District Practice at Southwark Cathedral on July 31st was attended by 33 members, and whilst the bells are extremely difficult, I feel we rang quite well. We rang Call-Changes, Plain hunt on 11, Stedman Cinques, Cambridge Royal and Little Bob Maximus.

Thankyou especially to the more experienced ringers who helped make this practice successful.

……………..

District Practice at Chelsfield.

The practice at Chelsfield on 20th July was well attended, (over 20) with many people downstairs as well as in the ringing room! We rang Plain Hunt on 5, Plain Bob Doubles, St Simon's Doubles, Cambridge S.Minor and Canterbury S. Minor. We also rang the last two spliced!

.................

District Meeting at Chislehurst

The District Meeting at Chislehurst was attended by approximately 35 people, and was short (hooray). It followed the Service, and a most excellent tea (thankyou to Mrs.Jones and co.) We rang Stedman and call changes before the service, and the general ringing after the meeting included Call-changes, Plain Bob Doubles, Stedman, Cambridge, Yorkshire and 8-spliced.

.................

County 8-bell Competition

The County 8-bell Competition was held at Speldhurst on June 22nd. The weather was o.k. and we rang 3rd out of 4, with two districts failing to show. We rang what I thought was a good course of Yorkshire, probably, in quality terms, not far behind the winners. The Judges, however, did not agree, and placed us 4th.

I apologise to the District for this result, and hope we will do better next year.

.................

Jubilee Ringing..

Information regarding the Jubilee celebrations is well documented on the K.C.A.C.R. web site, and is well worth a read. What a busy lot we were.

.................

District Practice at St John's Erith

It was good to return to St John's on June 15th after a long absence. The bells are not easy, but are much more audible than they used to be. This is due to the removal of the dodgy ceiling in the clock room. We rang Call-changes, Stedman, Grandsire, Yorkshire and Plain Hunt.

.................

District Practice at Bromley.

The Practice at Bromley on May 18th saw us ring Stedman, Grandsire, and several S.Major methods. Attendance wasn't mind-blowing, but those who came had a good time.

.................

District Meeting at Crayford.

The meeting at Crayford was conducted smoothly. After the service, an excellent tea was served. Ringing after the meeting was very good, and included Stedman Triples, Bristol S. Major and 8-spliced. Thankyou again to Crayford for their hospitality.

.................

District 6-bell Competition.

The 6-Bell Competition this year was held at Bexley on the back 6. Once again, a good overall standard was achieved. The ringing was judged by the District Master and Deputy Master and the results were as follows:

1st Chelsfield 48 faults

2nd Bexley 66 faults

3rd Eltham 71 faults

4th Crayford 78 faults

5th Chislehurst 96 faults

6th Erith C.C. 124 faults

It is rewarding to see this many bands entering, and I hope next year will be as good, if not better!

A.G.M. day 2002 1st April.

Despite the sad news of the death of the Queen Mum, the proceedings went ahead as planned. I feel that it is particularaly appropriate that so many of the Districts' bells were rung at this time, to celebrate the life of one who touched so many people's hearts.

The day was a success only because of the efforts of those who helped with the many tasks that made everything happen. Special thanks go to Len Morley and his committee of Carol Eastaugh, Sara Hardy and Margaret Heald, as well as all those who served on tables, cleared up afterwards, and opened up their towers. Thankyou all.

URGENT ANNOUNCEMENT

We are saddened by the news today (30th March 2002) that Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother died peacefully in her sleep at 3.15 p.m.

Whilst I feel that we should observe appropriate and respectful protocol, I do not believe that our normal duties a Bell-ringers are lessened by this sad news, and that we should attempt to carry on with arrangements as they stand, as far as is possible. The arrangements for Easter Monday and the K.C.A.C.R. A.G.M. still stand, and the Service, Lunch and Meeting will continue.

Ringing is at the discretion of the Incumbent and Tower Captain of each tower.

The decision at Beckenham and at Penge, in agreement with the Rector / Vicar of each tower, is that we may ring half-muffled, as a mark of respect.

I would be grateful if members would inform me of any decisions taken with regards to Monday, immediately.

.................

District Practice at Cudham.

The practice at Cudham was very good - These are difficult bells to hear and to ring, and everyone aquitted themselves very well. We rang call-changes on 10, Little Bob Major, Plain Bob Royal, and a touch of Stedman Caters. Thankyou to the local band for the tea and coffee! There were approx. 25 members present.

.................

District Practice at Eynsford.

The District practice at Eynsford on 9th February was less well attended, but we rang Kent S.Major and some spliced (C,Y,N,S,B) and the ringing was mostly good.

.................

District Practice at Beckenham.

The practice at Beckenham on the 26th January was well attended. We rang Stedman Caters, Cambridge Royal, and plenty of call-changes.

.................

District Meeting at Eltham.

The Meeting at Eltham was very well attended, and the discussion focussed mainly on the forthcoming AGM. A lovely Tea was provided by the local band and many thanks go to them for that, and for the use of their fine bells.

.................

New practice dates announced.

The first few practices for 2002 have now been arranged - see "District Practices" section.

.................

2001:

District Carol Service at Dartford.

The annual carol service on the 15th December was, once again, an excellent event. The District Choir performed well (with the help of some visitors) under the watchfull eye of our Director of Music, Mark Jones. Our thanks go to Mark for his hard work and organisational skills, to Stephen R.Davies M.A., F.R.C.O. for playing the Organ, and to the local band for the fine refreshments. Thanks go also to those in the congregation for supporting this event at a busy time.

.................

District Practice at St.Mary Cray.

The Practice at St.Mary Cray was attended by about 15 members, who rang Plain Bob, Grandsire, StMary Cray Bob Minor, Call-changes, Stedman, and some spliced. The ringing was mostly very good, and all very encouraging.

.................

District Practice at Biggin Hill.

The District Practice at Biggin Hill saw 16 members come together to ring Biggles Bob Minor (cheers Rups), Plain Bob minor and doubles, Stedman, London Surprise, and spliced Cambridge and London. Most touches were successful, and fairly well struck. I hope as many of you as possible will come to next months practice at St Mary Cray.

.................

Call-change competiton.

The 2001 call-change competiton was held on the 17th November at Crayford. No less than nine teams took part, which is great, and I feel reflects the good health of most District towers. It is encouraging to see some "new" bands entering, and I would encourage more to follow their example. I hope we can enjoy a similarly good turnout for the method competition in April.

The competition was ably judged by Lucy Reeve, who did a splendid job, and made positive and helpful comments about the afternoons ringing having spent a long time in a very cold, and increasingly dark Churchyard. Our thanks again to Lucy.

The results were as follows:

1st Crayford 93%
2nd Eltham 83%
3rd Beckenham 81%
4th Chislehurst 76%
5th St Mary Cray 75%
6th Horton Kirby 74%
7th Erith Christ Church 69%
8th Erith Joint 66%
9th Chelsfield 65%

Congratulations to Crayford for a splendid performance, and to the other bands for some very good ringing. I felt the overall standard was very pleasing.

.................

District practice at Crayford.

The District Practice at Crayford on 28th October was attended by about 30 people, and we rang Plain Bob Doubles, Plain Bob Triples, Crayford Little Bob Major (with 4ths and 6ths place bobs) (in separate touches!!) , Call Changes, Stedman Triples, and 5-Spliced S. Major (B,S-,L-,L,C-,Y,N,C-). Despite the ringing room being rather hot, and a little cramped, the ringing was petty good.

.................

Annual District Meeting at Beckenham.

The meeting at Beckenham on 13th October started with ringing, followed by Evensong led by Canon Derek Carpenter. After the service, we moved to the Church Hall for tea (sausage, beans and jacket potato) and this was followed by the business meeting. With an attendance of about 60, David Holdridge was elected Chairman, replacing Philippa, who has retired from office. Mark Jones was elected to the new post of Assistant Secretary. All other posts remain unchanged. A big thankyou goes to Philippa for the work that she has done for the District.

.................

E-group moves!

Dickon has started a new E-group for the District with Yahoo! and it is in everyone's interest to subscribe, as it provides the very latest information on the District, and on District towers, as well as personal news etc. To find out more, please go to-http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/group/lewisham_district or contact Dickon Love.

.................

District Practice at Chislehurst.

The practice at the Annunciation on the 15th September was a solemn affair, the ringing being half-muffled as a mark of respect for those who died as a result of the terrorist outrage in New York on the 11th September 2001. Numbers were down on previous practices, perhaps a reflection of the mood at this sad time. May love, peace and tolerance prevail in these difficult times.

……………..

District Practice at Bromley Parish.

The District practice at Bromley on the 25th of August went well, with an attendance of about 25 people. We rang call-changes, Plain Bob Minor, Grandsire Doubles, Plain Hunt on 7, London S. Major, Kent T.B. Major and 5-Spliced S. Major. Look out for the next practice!! (see District Practices! ¯ ).

.................

An Apology!

The site has not been updated regularly of late, due initially to my being too busy, and latterly due to back problems, which put me out of action for four weeks. I'm now trying to clear the backlog of jobs, and will update the site as and when the various practices are confirmed. Please keep checking!

.................

District Meeting at Eynsford on 14th July.

Due to my back problems, I could not attend but I understand that the meeting and ringing went well. Thankyou to Jeremy who not only stood in for me, but also for the chairman!

……………..

L County 8-bell competition at Hoo.

The County 8-bell was held at Hoo St Werburgh on June 24th. Unfortunately, we came last - this being mainly due to the conductor being unable to count to three or to ring "old duffers triples" (sometimes known as Single Oxford ). I apologize for this, but I'm sure (I) we will do better next time! It is interesting to note that we always do well on Surprise Major years, but not so well at the Triples/DNCBM years.....perhaps we're just too young!! Our congratulations go to Canterbury District, who won with a very good piece of ringing.

.................

District Practice at Horton Kirby.

For those who missed the opportunity to ring on this fine new six- bad luck! They are indeed a fine ring of bells. We rang Call-Changes, Plain hunt on 5, Bob Minor, Stedman, Cambridge and Wells S. Minor. A good evening was enjoyed by all.

.................

District practice at Greenwich.

On the 19th May, a good turn-out at Greenwich resulted in us ringing Yorkshire royal, Erin Caters, Little Bob Royal, and Stedman Caters. The latter was not good, so we shall be practising this in the near future !! The benefits of the work that the locals and the K.C.A. Bell hanging experts have carried out were instantly apparent; the bells now go much better. Thankyou to everyone who came.

...............

District Practice at Ash.

The District Practice at Ash-by-Wrotham started slowly - a lock-out was narrowly avoided! Once underway, we rang Call-changes, Plain Bob, Stedman, London, Old Oxford Delight and some Spliced. There were a good number of attendees, (about 25) and most of them adjourned to the Pub afterwards for Beer and a good chat. It's good to go to one of the towers that we don't visit too often, and I hope we return soon, hopefully to be joined by some of the locals.

..................

District 6-bell Competition.

The 6-bell method competition was held at St John's Penge on 28th April, and all of the bands rang well on this demanding 6. The results were as follows:

1st: Chelsfield (88 faults)

2nd: Beckenham (100 faults)

3rd: Eynsford (102 faults)

4th: Chislehurst (182 faults)

.................

District Practice at Foots Cray.

The Practice at Foots Cray on the 17th of March was well attended (27 people) and whilst the bells proved somewhat tricky, much of the ringing was useful. We rang Call Changes, Plain bob, Grandsire, Stedman, All Saints and several attempts at Foots Cray T.P., two of which were mostly successful. Thanks for coming!

.................

New: E-group for Lewisham District.

Dickon Love has now set up an E-mail group for our district, through which we can all send and receive group 'mails, news and gossip. I will be posting more details soon - watch this space.

..................

District Practice at Bickley.

The practice at Bickley on the 17th February was very well attended and we rang plenty of call-changes and several touches of Stedman Triples, most of which were successful. Whilst the bells are very good, I think it was clear that nothing but the very best effort provides good ringing here - they are not easy to strike well and can be unforgiving. Another worthwhile practice - thanks for coming.

.................

District Practice at Beckenham.

The District practice at Beckenham on 20th January was very well attended (32 people) and some very good ringing was acheived. Methods rung included Grandsire Caters, Plain bob Doubles and Triples, Stedman Caters (un-successful), Cambridge Major & Royal, Plain Hunt on 9, and 5-spliced S.Major (B,S,L,C,Y). The attendees then adjourned to the Jolly Woodman, and then to the Curry house. Thankyou to all who attended.

.................

District Meeting at Christ Church, Erith.

The meeting held at Erith began with general ringing at 3.00 p.m. where methods included Grandsire Triples, Plain Bob Triples and Major, Call Changes,Cambridge S.Major and a service touch of Stedman Triples. This was followed by the service, based on the A.S.B. evening prayer, and the an excellent tea prepared by the Erith band. The meeting came next and was short - not much was discussed!

After the meeting, more general ringing was enjoyed untill 8.00 p.m., and methods included all those rung before the service, and also 4-spliced (C,Y,N,S) and 8-spliced (std.8) S.Major. The bells at Erith are now much improved thanks to the work that Mark Backhouse has done with new pulleys etc. and they are a great deal better than I ever remember them - I'm looking forward to the next practice there.

Thanks to everyone who worked to make the afternoon a very enjoyable one.

2000.

……………….

D.P. at Eynsford

The practice at Eynsford on December 16th was the last of the year, and despite short notice, was well enough attended to be enjoyable, and I hope useful to those who were there. Afterwards, we retired to the Pub for a Christmas pint.

.................

2001 Practices announced

The practice dates for January - June 2001 are now listed in the District Practices section of this site. Please come along!!

..................

Call-change competition.

The District Call-change Competition was held at Eltham on 18th November. 10 teams were entered, which I think is a record - certainly in my time. Since I couldn't find a judge, I judged the competiton with Steve Kennett. We were impressed with the overall standard of ringing, especially considdering the number of less-experienced bands taking part. I'm pleased to say that nobody disgraced themselves, and all of the bands showed potential, which I hope they will build on. May I say again how pleased I am with the turn-out for this very worthwhile event. May I also remind the team that came 10th that they didn't lose, but came 10th out of 31 (32 if you count Erith entering 2 teams [well done chaps!]) I hope that we will see good numbers for the 6-bell method competition in March. The results were as follows:

10th: Foots Cray - 86.5 faults

9th: C.C. Erith - 67 faults

8th: Hayes - 65.5 faults

7th: Crayford - 56 faults

6th: Dartford - 51.5 faults

5th: Erith C.C. - 49 faults

4th: St Mary Cray - 31.5 faults

3rd: Eltham - 28 faults

2nd: Chislehurst - 27 faults

1st: Beckenham - 10.5 faults

A.D.M. at Dartford

The A.D.M. at Dartford was well attended and a variety of topics were covered. A number of officers positions were revised/created - please see District Officers section. Jeremy has been replaced as Newsletter Editor by Rupert Cheeseman with Cathy as his assistant. The role of "Press rep" has been amalgamated with this position, which will provide better continuity. Jim Rooke was elected to the position of "Sales Representative" and will be dealing with the books, sweatshirts, badges etc. The positions of Master, Dep.master, District reps and Secretary remain as in the period '99-00. Mary Andrews is due to complete 40 years service as Secretary in 2003, and has made it known that she would like to retire once this milestone has been reached. It has been suggested that one or two people should "shadow" her for the next couple of years and learn the ropes. If you feel that you could do this job, please make yourself known to the District officers. The position of Secretary is a very important one, and a smooth hand-over is essential.

The meeting was preceded by a Choral Service, and tea provided by the local band. There was open ringing before the service and after the meeting, and whilst the bells proved to be difficult to ring well some good ringing was achieved.

I would like to say a very big "Thankyou" to Jeremy for providing an excellent newsletter for us, which he has done for some years now. Jeremy urges all members to support the new ed. by sending as many articles as you can, details of outings, q.p.attempts, tower cleaning days or anything else amusing or interesting.

Thanks go to Jessica Vale for her service as Press Rep, a misleading title as it also involved running the bookshop etc.

Thankyou to the Dartford ringers for their splendid hospitality.

New Hardy!

The latest addition to the Hardy family arrived on Wednesday 4th October at 12.13 p.m. Christoper David wheighed-in at 8lb1oz and his sisters are very pleased to have a baby brother, even if he doesn't do much yet!

....

District practice at Southwark Cathedral

The practice at Soutwark on Wednesday 13th September was very successful, mainly due to good attendance! There were around 30 people there, and we rang call-changes, plain hunt on 11, Grandsire caters and some 4-spliced S.Major on the back eight. Thankyou to everyone who came. If people feel that they enjoyed and benefitted from this practice then I would be happy to arrange some more. Please let me know.

....

More practices coming soon

I am currently arranging the next round of practice venues, so please watch the "District Practices" section for "up-to-date" information.

....

District Practice at Swanscombe

The practice at Swanscombe on August 19th was again well attended, although some more experienced help would have been useful as the bells were quite tricky. We rang call-changes, Grandsire and Stedman, and on the whole the ringing was o.k. Thanks to all of the supporters.

....

Queen Mother: 100th Birthday

So far as I am aware, only three quarters and one peal were attempted for this occasion, of which two of the quarters were successful. They were: Beckenham, 1260 Grandsire Triples, and Crayford, 1300 Plain Bob Doubles. Well done to those who took part in these attempts. It does seem a little disappointing that in a district of 31 towers, only 4 managed to attempt anything at all, unless they didn't tell me that is. Perhaps we should resurrect the District quarter peal week to spur people on ...your comments please (by e-mail).

....

District Practice at Woolwich

Thankyou to all those who attended the practice at St.Mary's Woolwich on the 15th of July. Your attendance made this a worthwhile practice. There were 31 members present and we rang Call-changes, Plain Bob Major and Triples, Grandsire Triples, Stedman Triples, Cambridge S.Major, Plain Hunt on 7, and to finish a touch of 5-spliced S. Major (B,S,N,C,Y). These are a difficult ring of bells, and only 100% effort yields good ringing here - and we did have some good ringing. I hope that this achievement will spur us on to perform well when we visit Swanscombe in August, and that members will all benefit from these improved practices. I know I do!! (p.s. the Pub was good too!!). Thankyou to Bill Lanyon and all at Woolwich for making us welcome.

....

H.M. the Queen Mother:100th Birthday

On Friday 4th August H.M. the Queen Mother celebrates her 100th birthday. This is a remarkable achievement, both for her, and for the Country. On a special occasion like this one, it would be fitting if our District could arrange some ringing. Peals and Quarter peals would be great, but if this is not possible, then please try to arrange some general ringing (perhaps for half an hour) to mark this grand occasion. Please let me know if and what you ring so that I can compile some form of record, a copy of which I shall send to Her Majesty.

....

Disrict meeting at Horton Kirby

The meeting at Horton Kirby on the 8th July was a great success, and the hospitality of the local band was warmly received. After a cheerful service, the meeting was held. During the meeting, a number of points remaining from the last meeting i.e. the errors in the Handbook and insurance details still remained un-resolved. It would appear that we still need some answers to these questions, since for £9 a year, we receive a Handbook with errors and insurance for which we know very few details; not good enough.

Jeremy Byers, Newsletter editor, could not be present at the meeting, but stated by letter that he intends to resign from this post. He has done an excellent job as editor, and I hope that someone will step forward to continue his work. I personally feel that there is no doubt as to the positive role that the Newsletter plays, and that we should make every effort to see that its publication continues. If you feel that you could help, please step forward.

After the meeting, general ringing continued the proceedings until 8.00 p.m. I think everyone agreed that the hard work that has been done on the tower and bells is a total success, and that the local ringers are progressing very well.

....

County 8-bell competition

Lewisham secured their 9th win in 16 years for the 8-bell trophy at Linton on the 24th June. We won by a narrow margin (2 faults), so if we are to win next year, we will need to work hard! The band was: Cathy Cheeseman 1, Peter Swift 2, Rupert Cheeseman 3, Jeremy Byers 4, David Holdridge 5, Nick Wilkins 6, Mark Jones 7, James Hardy 8. The test piece was a course of Superlative Major. See K.C.A.C.R. site for more details.

....

D.P. at Hayes, 24th June

The practice at Hayes was not heavily attended, but those who came benefitted well and a good time was had by all. We rang: Cambridge, London, Norwich, Ipswich, Stedman, Plain Bob, Call-changes, Carlisle and some 5-spliced.

New:L.D. picture gallery

....

Horton Kirby

Horton Kirby are now ringing with practices on Thursday (8.00-9.30 p.m.), Sundays 9.30 - 10.00, and the sound control is completed. I believe that the 6th bell is expected soon.(Possibly around October)

....

Web-site re-arranged

This site has been re-arranged with the following improvements: The addition of the news archive, the news is now listed with the latest at the top (please send me your news!!) and separate sections for District practices, meetings and other events. I hope these changes meet with approval. I am always looking for new ideas, so please send them to me or tell me when you see me.

....

D.P. at Southwark

This turned out to be another poorly attended event-surprising since many people seemed keen for me to arrange it. It was rather embarrassing after asking a number of non-district members to support us. If people don't attend an event like this, then there's not much point having it. I hope to discuss these events at the H.K. meeting.

....

D.P. at Cudham

The practice at Cudham apparently went well. Unfortunately, I could not attend due to family illness (not the whole family!!), but Jeremy felt that the event had been worthwhile.

....

D.P.at Shoreditch

The practice at Shoreditch on the 20th May was the first of three 12-bell practices this year. Unfortunately, the number of people who attended was very disappointing, and the opportunity wasted. Thankyou to Simon Davies for his arrangements for this event.

....

E-mail broadcasts

It has been suggested that whilst some people may wish to put their e-mail address in the list on this site, some may not, and that a broadcast system of some kind might be the answer. The idea is for a private list of addresses to be held by me, so that I can send a brief e-mail to all those on the list to remind them of approaching practices and also of when the site has been updated with news, new dates, etc. I am now doing this. Please let me know or send your e-mail address to me at jameshardy@supanet.com

Please also let me know your personal practice requirements so that we can try to include them in the practice schedule, otherwise I can only guess!!

....

8th April - District meeting at Chislehurst.

The April D.M. took place at St Nicholas' Chislehurst with a good number of attendees crammed into a rather cosy room! The larger hall was in use for a function. After the service (common prayer evening service) a very good tea was provided by the local band and the meeting passed without incident!! This was followed by general ringing where some of the ringing was quite good and some not so!! The bells provided quite a challenge as they are somewhat demanding, but I feel that we did pretty well.

The minutes of the meeting will be published in the next newsletter.

....

 1st of April - District 6-Bell Competition

( no joke !!)

The 6-Bell Competition took place at S.S. Peter and Paul, Shoreham. Bands from Beckenham, Bromley Parish, Chelsfield, Crayford and Erith C.C. competed. Bromley were placed 1st with a very good 240 of Grandsire doubles. Second place went to Chelsfield (last year's winners) and third place to Beckenham. Crayford came fourth and Erith fifth. All of the bands rang well - especially as these are a very tricky ring of bells, most of the bells being quite odd-struck, and some very much so!

Well done to all those bands who entered...we hope to see more next year. Bromley Parish now go on to face the other five districts in the County 6-Bell in the autumn.

 2000 in 2000

I am pleased to announce that after failing to complete Peter Swift's specially composed 2000 of Stedman Caters on New Year's Day, (BOOZE? LATE NIGHT? MILLENIUM BUG?????), the same band met again on the 13th February and scored. Please see the next Newsletter for a full report of this event.

Jim's P.C. is now fixed !

I apologize for the recent irregularity of updates for this site - my P.C. developed B.S.E. and refused to perform any of the functions asked of it. As a result I had to format the drives etc. and start again, which took much longer than I expected !! All is well now, however, and I hope to resume normal service.

18th March - District practice at Crayford

As usual, this tower proved popular - 28 people attended, abilities were diverse, and the ringing-room was found to be too small !!

Methods rung were: Grandsire, Stedman (went crunch), Cambridge, Bob Doubles, Plain hunt, 5-spliced S.Major (B,S,N,Y,C) and Oxford Bob Triples. I am encouraged by the progress that many members are making - keep it up!!

19th February - District practice at West Wickham

The Surprise minor practice at West Wickham was perhaps not as well attended as hoped, but it was felt by those who did attend that it was usefull, and should be repeated later in the year. We rang plain courses and touches of Cambridge and Norwich, as well as two courses of London. Most of the ringing was o.k. considering that these are a challenging ring of bells.

22nd January- District practice at Beckenham

The practice at Beckenham was well attended (30 people) and a good range of methods were rung including: 6 lots of call-changes on 10, 3 touches of Grandsire caters, Stedman caters (not successful!!), 4-spliced Surprise Major (C,Y,N,S), Plain Bob Caters (a bob course), and "half a course" of Cambridge Surprise Royal.

Some of the ringing was o.k. and some was good - I think however that many people could benefit from another practice of this type sometime in the near future so watch this space for details.

Quiz night success!

The quiz-night held on the 12th February at St George's Church Hall was attended by 105 people! They formed 18 teams who competed whilst enjoying the fish and chips supper. They seemed to enjoy the quiz too, which was prepared by Sara Hardy and Ruth Pointer who spent a great deal of time concocting some very challenging questions.

The event was won by the team from St George's choir (team name Cantoris) who steamed ahead in the last few rounds to beat off second place Whinlanders (a church team). The 13 district teams lagged behind somewhat!! Well done to Sara and Ruth for arranging a good "fun" event and to Philippa, (M.C.), Steve (marker) and anyone else who helped with the arrangements.
